It's been awhile, I hope you'll forgive me. Turns out this whole new profession/ new job thing has been a little tiresome. A little a lot, actually. But things are alright, we're peddling along. Trying to not sleep through my alarm clocks AND eat a vegetable at least daily. Not always easy.

It was a very sad thing for the music world, losing Amy Winehouse. Every time she pops up in playlists, I'm still taken aback by a mix of missing her and continually being impressed by her talent. And so it's pretty sweet that something fresh is on it's way, Lioness: Hidden Treasures, featuring 2 new songs and cover photography by our very own Bryan Adams. Out December 5th.

This week, we enjoyed a cozy dinner by the light of our new fireplace. Not only does it give off a warm light, it also makes subtle crackling noises.

Freddy gifted it to us last week before moving back to Vancouver. He's one of the very first friends I made at OT school. The second I laid eyes on him, with his good haircut, nice shirt and full sleeves of tats, I knew we'd hit it off. Plus, his name was Ferdinand. (Yes, I am totally superficial.) He also had good shoes. All jokes aside though, Freddy, we'll miss you. We will also be thinking of you very often this winter.

Thankfully we still have Lindsay to entertain us for a couple of months.

Today, I took myself out on a date.

It's been unseasonably warm here these past few days, and since this is my last week before starting to work (gulp), it's been busy. Trying to tend to a million little details of life that have sort of been neglected over the past few weeks/months. New light bulbs? Check. Haramaki pick-up? Check. Bank? Check. Drs. appointments? Vacuuming under the bed? Check, check.

There are still many things on the list, but today, it was all about dating myself. Which was really nice, I must say. The day-long excursion included a haircut, lunch (outside! on a terrace!), some window shopping (Les Touilleurs), and then meeting up with friends for coffee. Good times.

On my way home, I stopped into Renaud Bray, where I firstly browsed the latest Dwell, and then somehow ended up reading Anxiety for Dummies that got me so worked up I managed to fumble with the thing, and then drop it, sending it flying a good 10 feet from where I was standing. Yes, my friends, it's as though the thing had wings. And the lovely employee leapt to pick it up in record time, only to see the title of the book, expose a very Ohhhhh smile, and hand it back to me, ever so awkwardly.

Whatever, I'm an anxious one these days, what can I tell you?
As the desperate housewives of NY once said, Say la wee.

It's waterproof, has the date, was perfect for Africa, and lights up well. Also it is very lightweight and I don't mind at all when kids or pets lick it.

But all along, I've been eying other watches. Waiting for the right one to come along. And I found it.

Last Friday night we were invited to a very big Halloween party. One of our friends was thoughtful enough to let us know beforehand that some people would be dressed up as Hasidic Jewish folk, so naturally we chose not to attend. I mean, let's face it, we're Jewish, it's Friday and we are celebrating Shabbat with our family, and then heading to a party where people are 'dressing up' as religious Jews? Not so much, thanks. Our non-Jewish friends ended up being practically more offended than we were, and instead we drank champagne and ate tiramisu until the wee hours of the morning. Which was the best.

But this whole thing got me thinking. In discussing it with a few people, and doing a little googling, I came across Ohio University's "We’re a Culture Not a Costume Campaign”. And I have to say, I appreciate the effort, especially in light of the hate crimes and discrimination that are rampant in this world of ours. I believe in using Halloween to inject whimsy, creativity, and even a bit of spookiness into our daily lives. But it's not a time to polarize or alienate others.

Do you agree? I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.

It is sort of hard to believe that after 2 1/2 years of school, including 8-months worth of clinical rotations, a summer-long Master's project, and countless assignments, projects and exams, I am now an Occupational Therapist. (Well, to be precise, I can officially begin working in Quebec as of next week).
It definitely went by quickly, and as I sat on the metro last night after my last-ever day of clinical rotation, exhausted and bug-eyed, I reflected on the past few years and on all that I have learned. I still have moments of uncertainty and don't always trust my judgement 100% when it comes to my treatment protocols, but I no longer feel limited by fear, and my grasp of the language is on the up and up. Because, you know, there is a very specific medical/OT language- full of -isms and -ias and -ions and all sorts of other tricky nomenclature. I have learned that trial and error is part of the game, and as long as you have good clinical reasoning to back yourself up, a respectful relationship with your client, you're alright.

So here we are, a week before the Canadian Board certification exams, and I have slept in til 11, and my house is a mess, and I have lots of e-mails and orders and other things to attend to.

And I am jobless (for now).

To all of my OT friends, congrats on this being the end of the school road. I wish you all the best in your future careers.

She is an engineer, of the chemical kind:

Her name is Charlotte.

She owns product lines, and lives rather far away in a charming but otherwise small town with not much to do. She wakes up at 4:45 AM Monday-Friday, and starts work at 6 AM, usually ending around 5 if she's lucky, 6-7 if she's not. How badass is that now?

It's not immediately obvious from the picture, what with the steel-toe boots and protective eyewear and all, but Charlotte is one who loves shopping every now and again. Hence the F21 trip. Where we both picked up the same skirt.

Miraculously, on our way back from Italy, we got upgraded to First Class. It was obviously heaven, although we both ended up getting ~~a little~~ tipsy off of the most delicious New Zealand white wine. This made landing, the ride home and the jet lag a little hairy, shall we say. My mission upon our arrival however was to find the wine. I needed to experience the crisp grapefruit aromas, the intense passion fruit (in a dry wine!) again. I am happy to report that, with a little bit of trial and error, I tracked it down.

Before we get into the long week-end (I'm still digesting it), I thought I'd write a little post about a great film that we watched when we weren't peeling veggies, making pumpkin pies, or best of all, eating:

A beautiful film, with two of my favorite comedic actors. Away we Go follows these two across North America (including Montreal! albeit a fake version), in search of the perfect place to start their new family. As with a lot of Sam Mendes, it goes at a very interesting pace. Not too fast, and yet slow enough to capture all of the strong comedy without it getting boring. And very pretty cinematography. Highly recommend.

In the spirit of gratitude on this fine holiday, I thought I'd list a few things I'm truly thankful for.

I'm thankful for a week-end away with my family. And for turkey, pumpkin pie and all the trimmings.

I'm thankful for everyone that supports handmade haramakis.

I'm thankful for this guy.

I'm thankful for the sweet old lady I'm working with right now, because she told me that she is thankful for me. And because she gives me daily laughing fits. And blows me kisses.

I'm thankful for yoga.

I'm thankful for the people who stay at the hospital all night saving lives. And for their partners and babies who patiently share them with the rest of us.

I'm thankful for those of you who read this blog, I really am.

You just need to go ahead and order a couple of pizzas for dinner. Today was one of the days.
I spent the afternoon observing in the Burn Unit at the hospital I am at right now, and it was pretty awesome. Picture a bunch a young guys cracking jokes while getting scar massage and all sorts of other hand and upper extremity therapy. Good times.

In other news, Fall has pretty much arrived, meaning that the Haramaki Love home office has been in busy bee mode filling orders. Here on the home-front we've also pulled out our winter comforter, merino sweaters and little moccasins. Boo with a side of I love Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

Being back to an 8-5 schedule, blogging has been a little tough. Evenings either consist of going out, staying in and being in bed very early, or order-packaging marathons. TV watching marathons have also happened, on occasion.

So a few days late, let's talk about the week-end for a moment, because nowadays, it is pretty much my favorite time of the week.

Saturday was lazy: sleeping in, long chatty breakfast, sunny afternoon nap, a little cleaning, and then a fun housewarming party.

On Sunday, we went apple picking with these lovebirds. It was actually, as far as I know, my first time ever. And despite the crowds, it was awesome. Followed by a steaming bowl of Pho, it was a perfect Sunday.

I never told you about Italy

I wrote about our time in Germany (here and here), but kinda dropped the ball after that.

We started in Venice, and let's be honest, we were a little skeptical. Certain themes were running through our heads:

'Venice? So crowded. Terrible food. So SMELLY.'

But we knew that we wanted to go, and we decided on two days. If we hated it, two days wouldn't be the end of the world. Or so we thought. As it turned out, we could have easily spent an entire week. We absolutely fell in head-over-heels love with Venice. The tiny streets, multiple bridges, gorgeous architecture, endless art and design shows (it was the Biennale), just wow.

And you know what else? We had the best meal of our entire trip in Venice. Possibly in our entire lives! And it was a HUGE production, including a long wait, and lots of rudeness, and heart palpitations. But Mr. D. tells that one so well, I am going to try and convince him to write about it for the blog. We'll see.

Our camera worked up-until Venice, and then it was over. So here are some snapshots.

We took it easy shopping-wise, which was nice. But we did manage to pick up a few things on our way.

This coat, because Germany was very cold and I came unprepared. And I will say, H&M is a way more pleasant shopping experience in Europe: no tweens losing their sh*t, no tornado shoppers, no lineups. Just how I like it.

But what I have been getting the most enjoyment out of are these candies:

which I dare say are among the most delicious in the whole wide world. I've been eating them every single night while streaming television. (I'm back to the grind, so I'm allowed thankyouverymuch.)

How to get your man to have a girly afternoon with you (aka - a pedicure)

Saturday I tweeted the following:

I managed to trick Dan into a girly afternoon of pedis, pastries and tea. I love him. #yayforcoldmeds

Who knew people would go as far as e-mailing for my secrets.
So here you are.

First things first - my disclaimer. On Saturday, poor Daniel was still a little under the weather with his cold. And had been cooped up for a few days. So what was the first step?

Step 1: Administer cold medication.
Step 2: Walking back from brunch (or any food-related activity), casually mention how nice it would be to sit in air conditioning and get a good foot rub.
Step 3: Stop into a corner store and offer to pick up man's favorite magazine for him to read during said 'foot rub'. {Avoid the word pedicure until the very last moment}
Step 4: Make a bee-line for the nearest salon. (and say a little prayer that they are open. And have two chairs available.)
Step 5: Half-way there, begin going ON and ON about the MASSAGE chairs.
Step 6: Just about there, mention the word pedicure, quickly followed by foot rub, the favorite magazine, the MASSAGE chairs.
Step 7: Get him in the chair.
Step 8: Enjoy.

On our last night in Bremen, we had dinner with our hosts, and retreated back to their beautiful home on Parc Allée for drinks.

So, the intensive regimen didn't exactly work, but hopefully the 12 hours of sleep + the chicken soup Mr. D is lovingly preparing for me right this minute will conquer this thing.

The soup, adapted from Grandma's chicken soup above

1 big organic chicken
Rosemary salt
Carrots
Olive Oil
Lemons
Green onions
Lots of garlic
Bay leaves
H20

De-skin and chop up the chicken. Put lots of olive oil in a big pot and throw in the onions, garlic and chicken and mix around for a minute or so. Add the water, the bay leaves, and boil for as long as you can stand. A little while later, add your veggies, salt to taste, and closer to the end, squeeze in the juice of 1 or 2 lemons, and throw the whole lemon in afterward. Gives this soup a tangy je-ne-sais-quoi.

Enjoy.

The I'm on the verge but cannot get sick remedy

echinacea, you are pretty

Like most people, I hate being/getting/feeling sick. Most likely because it doesn't happen all that often, but when it does, it really hits. This morning I woke up with a sore throat. Here's my intensive regimen to kick this in the ass, if you're interested.

7 am. 1000 mg Vit. C, salt gargle, green tea, lots of h2o
9 am. down a glass vial of echinacea purpurea (1000 mg)
10 am. 2 cold Fx, grapefruit seed extract in juice (silent killer)
11 am. 1000 mg Vit. C
noon-3. nap
3 pm. 1000 mg Vit. C, salt gargle, green tea, lots of h2o
3:30 pm. down another glass vial of echinacea purpurea (1000 mg)
4:00 pm. tea, silent killer in juice
4:30 pm oregano oil under the tongue

Also, I've avoided the sugar and the dairy all day, and the heavy foods. Mainly to give my body a chance to fight it off without using up a ton of energy on metabolizing sugar.

I put on a haramaki first thing, and next I am going to peroxide my ears. Maybe a shot of whiskey for good measure while I'm at it.

Let's see if this shit works.

Although it's always a little rough coming home from vacation, it's also quite nice to be home on a week-end. Especially when it includes rooftop parties, late-night snack attacks, sidewalk sale strolls (street food + RIPPLES!), slightly tipsy trips to the bike store, a movie date with my best friend, torrential downpours and brunch with our favorite cousin. Oh, and did I mention that I got to squish the cutest baby on Earth for a good few hours?? That too.

In other news, I am still craving pesto mozzarella pizza at ALL HOURS of the day and night.

We started out in Germany. It was cold, it was rainy, but we were there for one of my best friend's wedding. And we were there to party. And party, we did. Til the very last night, at 4:30 am (a mere 2 hours before our train to Berlin. Not pretty.)

What we love about German weddings:

My worst summer job ever

Of all the random jobs I've had, by far the worst was at the Montreal Jazz Festival as a Hagen-Daaz ice cream girl. I was 16. And man was that a painful job. Long hours, on my feet, no breaks. I remember having to pee for hours. And illegally consuming the 'unsellables'.

A facial wipe that I like. I have tried every single facial cleansing wipe I have come across, with not a whole lot of success (read: not the best cleansing action, and skin not so happy about it).

While shopping at the Cheapo Depo (as we like to call it) on our camping trip, I discovered Blûm Naturals.

And let me say, these Organic towelettes are rocking my world. Especially with planes/trains/heat.

I got lucky

You know when you are shopping a mere 5 days before a special occasion because you ~~are convinced you~~ have not a single thing to wear? That was my situation for an upcoming event. So in a bit of a frenzy, I did the rounds: FCUK, Club Monaco, Zara, H&M, Banana Republic. And found nada. Nothing. Zilch.

I tried on the following, among many others:

The first was just plain awful and sac-like, the second too sequin-y, and the third, well, I rather show you the back only because frankly that was the only decent aspect of the thing.

And just as I was about to give up and wear this again, I noticed BCBG across the street! And walked in. (FYI: for the very first time ever.) And you know what I found? An amazingly helpful and knowledgeable SALESPERSON. How rare is that nowadays? We became instant friends, and giggled like schoolgirls as I tried on 10 dresses, hesitated between two for a good 15 minutes, and then finally chose this:

And I couldn't be happier. Although interestingly, the photo itself is the worst of the lot. Go figure.

Joanna got a lot of bloggers and readers thinking with her post this week about talking to girls. Based on this great article by Lisa Bloom, it really does make you think about our automatic reflexes when it comes to communicating with children. And with people in general, for that matter. How is it that we are so preoccupied with the exterior, so much of the time? My guess is that it is simply easier. And seemingly more pleasant, the path of least resistance aka complimenting another. While it certainly is sweet and appreciated, it's worth reflecting on and being aware of, especially when talking to little (and impressionable) kids.

Here's to a happy week-end, and harnessing the power of open-ended questions.

As we are told, communication is the key here. But what we're not really thinking of talking about, especially as they occur, are those patterns that arise naturally. It may feel like we have no control over them, or we simply accept despite them not always being healthy.
And so, as it happens in life, often enough I might add, the love breaks down.
And you lose a friend, a partner, a family member, along with a small little piece of yourself.
And it's sad. And kind of bewildering too.
But you do learn.
To be a better observer of your patterns. To take better care of yourself, with a more profound understanding of your needs. You become intimately aware of your thresholds.
Your limits.
And ultimately, this allows you to choose who and how to love, and maybe even do it a little bit better this time.

I watched the High Cost of Living the other day and liked it a lot. Zach Braff and Isabelle Blais star in this dark love story, set in Montreal in the wintertime. I have a weakness for films that show off our city, I must admit. But Braff and Blais so realistically pull off the portrayals of their damaged characters, it's well worth the watch.

I happen to be one of those people who tends to be inconsistent with some things and overly consistent with others. My days are like snowflakes, no two are alike, and yet there are things that I prioritize as much as possible: family, friends, favorite TV shows, and housework. However, when it comes to exercising, reading, blogging, tweeting, cooking, eating well, having a schedule, I am a little all over the place. And my business falls someplace in the middle.

So, at most times, my house will be pretty clean with everything in it's place, but my fridge might be completely empty and you'll find me eating toast all day. Or I will have caught up on every single possible TV show at the expense of exercise and getting to bed at a decent hour.

So apologies for being absent, and right now, I'm back. In recent news:

- wrapping up my master's project cooking group, which has been fun

- planning our honeymoon, at last!
- enjoying country time and lots of fun summer times with friends
- our nephew's birthday present by the super talented Bess of English Muffin

- some house tweaking, as always

homemade vanilla syrup

I brought back about 30 vanilla beans from my time in Zanzibar. One went straight into our sugar jar, another few in a bottle of vodka, others given as gifts. But the most useful thing that I've made is vanilla syrup! I put it in my morning latte, london fogs, sprinkle it on crepes, practically eat it by the spoonful.

I discovered it thanks to Amanda Hesser's very simple recipe:

Vanilla Bean Syrup

- Ingredients -
1 3/4 cup sugar
2 vanilla beans, split and seeds scraped

- Instructions -
In a small pan dissolve the sugar and water over medium heat. Add the vanilla beans and stir a little so the seeds and fragrance disperse. Take the pan  off  the heat. When cooled, store in an airtight container in the fridge.

There are a ton of recipes online, most with vanilla extract. But if you have a bean on hand, I'd highly recommend it.

This is a warning to any woman trying to sell her wedding dress on the Craigslist. For the second time, I have been contacted by a scammer with a long blah blah email. I immediately had a hunch but wrote back anyway, saying that she could by ALL MEANS come over and try on the dress.
Here was 'Melinda' 's reply:

Here in Canada it was a regular, short week-end, but it was so beautiful out today that around 3 we said ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and headed outside.

As it turns out, either we're not the only ones who work from home or a very large portion of the Montreal population simply does not work. And instead relaxes on the gentle slopes of Parc Lafontaine on Monday afternoons.

It was bliss. We played frisbee, sunbathed, did martial arts (well he did), read, and then headed to la Banquise for a huge and very un-kosher poutine smothered in pepper sauce, sliced steak and fried mushrooms and onions. YUM. Then we felt rather heavy and a little gross so we decided to play more frisbee before heading home and resuming the work of the day.

Rainy week-end

It was a quiet week-end. Lots of American Idol was watched. Lots.

Lots of food was consumed, too. On Saturday, we had brunch at Le Passé Composé. I had the eggs Benedict with smoked salmon which was very tasty. Our buddy Dave the Scotsman ordered some kind of rabbit thing, which according to him was very French. But good.

Then we chilled at home and listened to reggae, and Dan made Dave a mixed tape. Meanwhile, Kaki and I thought it was very cute and gossiped on the couch.

On Sunday morning, Dan nipped out and surprised me with pastries and flowers. Then I cooked up a big pot of meat sauce as we were having friends and their 2 kiddos over for dinner. Love having the little ones running around our house.

And that was the week-end, in a nutshell. Sometimes I appreciate a little rain, you know?

A few weeks ago, Lindsay of Fait Ici contacted me about having Haramaki Love in her shop. And I did what I always do before entering into a relationship with a new store: my homework. I was delighted to discover such a nice concept. Fait Ici offers local, organic products and produce, as well as delicious food on its sweet terrace. I knew we would be a great match.

When I finally showed up last week, haramakis in hand, I was instantly smitten by the shop's beautiful merchandising (Lindsay is a graphic designer), the smell of home-made mac n' cheese and of course the warm welcome of Lindsay herself.

Amidst the end-of-semester stress/group projects/papers/impending exams/presentations/drama, it was a nice break celebrating Davina + Daniel's bachelorette/bachelor parties this week-end. Marie-Eve of Lake Jane organized the sweetest bridal shower, and the bachelorette consisted of penises, vodka flasks, sushi, strangers, sidewalk antics, pangpang kareoke, tequila shots and dancing, pretty much in that order. We are very pumped for the wedding that is now less than 2 weeks away!!

Sunday was work, + a nice brunch and pjs all day and a couple of long phone chats with my girls.

It's been a month since Africa, and settling back into Montreal life has been a little tricky. And cold. But Spring is finally on it's way, which is very exciting!

I have urges, being here in Africa, to give away all my stuff. Everything. Even my sunglasses. (although that would probably be a bad idea. It's very bright here.)
I find myself observing everyone that I see and trying to make out what they might need that I have. A towel? Flip flops? Shampoo? I know it sounds strange, but whenever I travel, I do this. Particularly because I recognize that I have so damn much. So much. It's amazing how much we need to feel well and satisfied as compared to people in other parts of the world.
Last time I was here, our professor talked about monetary versus personal poverty. He explained how poverty to us is different than to the Kenyans we were working with. Although we could physically survive with far less than we have, we would feel emotionally empty due to all the associations we have with the objects around us.

So we'll see. But I'm definitely giving away most of my stuff away the week before I leave. I just have to figure out the who and the how.

safari gear

There is this phenomenon among travelers to Africa I call 'safari gear'. And it gets me every single time I see it (which is often). You know the type: all beige, awkward pants that zip off at different lengths, very unflattering pocketed shirts, some kind of sporty shoe. It's actually pretty funny. Because while it can be quite dusty here, meaning that white and black clothing can end up looking grimy, there really is no reason for going to some mountain equipment sports store and paying a couple of hundred dollars on clothes you'll only wear for ten days once or twice in your entire life. But that's just my opinion. (And thanks for listening. I needed to get that one off my chest.)

For some reason, several people have wanted to know what I packed for my African adventure. A few people in particular have been very specific in asking about the kind of footwear I lugged here with me. When one lady e-mailed as she is about to go on safari, I decided to write a little post about the 5 pairs of shoes I brought.

1. The wear-on-the-plane-and-to-work TOMS shoe in navy. I picked it for it's comfort level (amazing), breathability and especially the elephant print inside. Perfect closed-toe shoe for very warm weather.
2. The everyday-after-work-and-even-sometimes-to-work shoe.
When I lived in Japan, I became a Birkenstock fan. Mainly because they had much nicer designs (and patent leather).

3. The if-I-ever-need-to-do-some-sort-of-physical-activity shoe. (Which has yet to happen, btw.)
4. The week-end-and-evening-and-basically-whenever shoe.
Yep, another pair. What can I say I'm a fan.

5. The it's-raining-buckets-but-I-still-want-to-wear-this-cute-dress shoe. (in black.)
It's a CROC (*gasp*). But in Africa, you need a CROC. You really do.

Greetings from the land of Zanzibar!
All is well here, the people are welcoming, the streets are confusing, the kids are cute, and the air is hot. Very, very hot.
We have been here a week, and managed to find an apartment, take the local minibuses to the hospital, find a mobile phone, score free wireless internet, go on a spice tour (pictured above), and get ourselves invited to a local wedding. (More on those last two later.)
Hope that all is well with everyone and that the start of 2011 has been sweet.

Vitamin D

What do you know, this super vitamin not only fights cancer, but it also fights colds. Yet another reason to take it.

How much?

Osteoporosis Canada recommends 400 to 1,000 IU for adults under age 50 without osteoporosis or conditions affecting vitamin D absorption, and 800 to 2,000 IU for adults over 50.

The Canadian Cancer Society recommends 1,000 IU daily during the fall and winter. During the spring and summer, that can be accomplished through normal daily exposure to the sun.

Which one?
My NMD, on the other hand, recommends this one, at 10,000 IU a pop.

Nie Nie

I've blogged about my love of Nie Nie before, and thought I'd express a little more love because truly the woman deserves it. I enjoy reading about her life so much. Her children, home, day to day musings. Her marriage is so sweet and real, and she writes with a mix of punch and grace. A real inspiration!

The Baby Room (not mine!) Part I

I have friends having kids.
And these friends have been asking me about baby room decor.
'Baby room decor? How should I know?'
They told me to use my head. So I did, and here are a few things that I came up with.

First things first: the rocker/glider/whatever you want to call it. They can be very ugly, but there are some pretty dope ones out there too:

Probably not the most practical (a little hard and a little low-backed), but wouldn't this Eames Rocker fit perfectly in your living area/play room post baby-room?

Next up:

Hello, beautiful. (Look at that base.) Choose your colors.
Plus, it's made in Canada.

And then, there's my favorite, Jason Lewis. Le sigh.

Last but not least, there's our trusty IKEA. They've re-mixed the Poang chair and added a rocking base. It's no Jason Lewis, but for 229$, it'll do the job. Plus, it is very comfortable. Here it is in Tuna light grey:
